The Lives of the Artists by Giorgio Vasari

The Lives of the Artists by Giorgio Vasari is one of his most well known works in the field of literature. This book is comprised of information that gives members of the public a close up look of many Renaissance artists. Giorgio Vasari invested a lot of time in the work and many were willing to share details with him. He is an interesting storyteller and wrote in a conversational style that was suited to his time.

The Lives of the Artists by Giorgio Vasari is one of the most well known works by this talented individual. Vasari is also known as a very successful architect and painter. He is responsible for the Uffizi Palace in Florence, which is now an important museum. While he was a gifted painter, he was overshadowed in that field by Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael.

The Lives of the Artists by Giorgio Vasari: Extensive Research

He traveled a lot in order to get information for the Lives of the Artists, which was also known as Lives of the Most Excellent Architects, Painters and Sculptors. Many of the roads he traveled on were quite poorly built and he got from place to place on the back of a horse. This was a fairly speedy means of travel at the time but not the most comfortable.

He also looked at as much of the actual paintings as he could. He wanted to have a firsthand experience of his subjects wherever possible. However in some cases, he had to rely on second hand sources of data. Raphael, for example, was already deceased by the time he started work on lives of the Most Excellent Architects, Painters and Sculptors.

The Lives of the Artists by Giorgio Vasari: First Edition Released After Years of Work

The first edition of the Lives of the Artists took Giorgio Vasari seven years to complete. Doing this work took him away from his wife, Niccolosa Bacci. She was not the main focus of his time. His writing also took time away from his work as painter and architect.

The first edition of the book was released in 1550. Almost two decades later, in 1568, he published another edition which was revised. It also contained more information on the lives of the artists, painters and sculptors who were discussed in the work. Like modern artist Yoshimoto Nara, he was successful as both a writer and an artist.

The Lives of the Artists by Giorgio Vasari: An Interesting Biography

Vasari was well liked by other artists and members of the public in general. Perhaps it is this that gave him the ability to get stories out of people that no one else could. His easy going nature attracted many people to him and his work. This was very important because it also helped him to pull sponsors who would finance his endeavors.

His book is not regarded as the most accurate portrayal of the lives of the painters and sculptors. He did not have other reference books or libraries to check and so some of the dates are not correct. However many of the artists, like Michelangelo were friends of his and so his book is a good source of information on them.
