One of the greatest exponents of Art Deco was the poster designer Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron, who worked under the psuedonym Cassandre (1901-68). Surrealism was an avant-garde movement that emerged in the 1920s. The poet André Breton founded a journal called La Littérature and used it to develop a Surrealistic approach to writing. Surrealism began as a literary movement, but rapidly expanded to encompass fine art and cinema. Surrealist artists were influenced by Sigmund Freud’s study of the human mind.

The western art: an illuminated era. The illumination typifies the Middle Ages as a period of important mechanical inventions, advancing technology, and scientific discoveries. This period begins with the victory of Constantine the Great under the sign of the cross at the Milvian Bridge in 312. In the Byzantine world, Greek was spoken, people were closer to Antiquity, and the styles of that era remained present despite being forgotten in the West for several centuries.

The advent of the machine in the nineteenth-century had such significance that the subsequent years can legitimately be termed the Machine Age. Among the great number of cultural changes engendered by this new era was the adoption of a machine aesthetic in the fields of architecture and design. This was of central importance to the Modern Movement as it provided a means by which its practitioners could engage with what they regarded as the spirit of the age.

No coherent style, as with other artistic movements, connects those whom we now regard as Romantic. Since their work so often involves the rendering of visionary and imaginative elements from their personal worlds, the subject matter is, by nature, individual and unique to each of them. Yet inasmuch as our definition of 'Romantic' exists on this basis, I believe we can safely conclude that Lambeth's greatest prophet was indeed one of them.
